Versed: Nas featuring Rick Ross – Accident Murderers
As we’re nearing the release of Nas’s much-anticipated upcoming album, Life Is Good, the rapper yesterday drop a fresh cut from the project.
Accident Murderers is a heavy-hitting single and like a lot of latter-day Nas, it boils down to a numbers game, as much about missteps avoided as good decisions made: No I.D. is behind the boards, and he samples a fevered, propulsive Hammond organ lick. The track also features a verse from one of hip-hop’s most sought-after emcees, Rick Ross.
The track is Nas, telling a story about the consequences of stray bullets (“Niggas cannot aim, and innocent niggas die”) luckily the track avoids the vague conspiracy wilderness he’s been lost in for the past few years, chiseling out sharp, tiny details like “Side of his mouth, toothpick one eyebrow raised.” It’s focused and hard hitting and stays in its lane: Nas, it’s a best-case scenario and it suggests that the new LP Life Is Good might shake Nas out of his long run of disappointing releases.
