There was an outpouring of emotion from the fashion world to mourn the passing of eccentric Italian fashion writer Anna Piaggi, who was found dead in her home in Milan yesterday.
Front-row fixture Piaggi, who was credited with making vintage fashion popular amongst Italians, was known for her flamboyant appearance: pale blue hair, white powdered make-up, cupid’s bow lips, brightly coloured fur stole, clashing patterns and a penchant for milliner Stephen Jones’ hats. Piaggi’s memorable wardrobe was even the subject of a V&A exhibition in 2006.
Celebrities and fashion personalities have taken to Twitter to post their sadness at the news, with burlesque star and vintage fashion lover Dita von Teese writing:
‘So sad to hear that Anna Piaggi, one of my last icons of beauty and fashion has passed. She was the height of glamorous eccentricity.’
Designer Stefano Gabbana, one half of the Dolce & Gabbana duo, wrote:
‘RIP Anna Piaggi… (((( ciao grande Anna!!!’
While Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen‘s fashion line, Elizabeth and James tweeted:
‘One of my favourite things about Anna Piaggi – she used the same red Olivetti typewriter for 40 yrs. Personal style down to every detail. #RIP.’
and we just wanted to say Rest in Peace Anna Piaggi, you and your inimitable, larger-than-life style will be missed, lots of Love and Respect from the team here at Verse HQ
